New pictures! They're also in the sidebar as "June 2005." Check out Memorial Day 2005 if you haven't already, too.

So here's the status: The big room is almost done. The crown molding is up and looks pretty great, if I do say so myself - thanks to Josh Apple for the help installing and Guy Strauss for lending the miter saw.

Track lights are up, too, which was fairly easy except for the big hole and damaged drywall left by the prior fixtures. Nothing a little drywall patch and some joint compound couldn't solve, though. Track lights are very easy and make everything look classier, somehow.

We put the compressed fiberglass board back up in the corners and on the ceiling corners (thanks to Amy for the extra hands). The burlap doesn't seem to stretch quite as tight or adhere quite as well the second time I put it up, which isn't a surprise, I guess. I'll need to figure that out eventually, but it's just a cosmetic thing...though the rest of the room looked so good before that it's actually kind of an issue. I'll figure it out.

I'm also carving out part of the front left corner of the room to hold the computer. (there used to be fiberglass there.) This will both get the machine out of the way and quiet it down - I'll cover the front of the box with a removable panel (fiberglass mounted on MDF) - covered to quiet it, but removable so that I can get to the CD drive, etc. As far as cooling the machine, you can barely see it in the June 2005 pictures, but there's a hole that goes in between the rooms that will serve as a conduit for both cables and hot air, thanks to a small, quiet fan that's going in the small room. Hopefully it will work.

Small room still needs the parquet floor, but I need to finish prepping the slab that's there, which is a bit uneven around the edges. I've patched the gap between the slab and the wall footing and repaired some other divets left by the removal of the carpet tackstrips (thanks, Jill and Rhett, for pulling nails out of concrete). Hopefully it'll be dry and ready to go by next weekend...?

Anyway, we're almost done with this round. It felt pretty great to bring the instruments back into the studio - both because the time when I can use the studio again is drawing near, and because it got the things out of the damn living room!

Phase III - just beginning

We had a fantastic round of studio renovations this Memorial Day weekend. We put in some new colors, sound treatments, and baseboard. Tons of kudos to Jill and Rhett of Arlington Priest, Shana Alverson, David Stephens, Blake Guthrie, Richard Parsons, and Hunter Thompson for all of their hard work.

I didn't have time to take many pictures in medias res this time, as I was frantically trying to give everybody stuff to do, but I managed to click a few--and snapped a few this morning after putting in baseboards last night. Take a look.

Still to do: light fixtures, laying a parquet floor, and crown molding. Coming soon...

a realization

it dawned on me when telling people "I'm almost done with the studio" that I'm lying. It's the old recording adage: "you never finish a record -- you just stop working on it" [or, alternately, and perhaps equally apropos here, "you run out of money."].

A better description of the end of each phase of construction here is that I now feel okay about bringing someone into the room to record, whereas I wouldn't feel quite as good doing that when there were, say, no walls. Or drywall dust all over the room. Or fiberglass...uh...fibers.

But that's done--it's mopped and most of the furniture is even back in place. Have a look-see. The colors don't come in quite right since I'm not a pro photographer, but it's a nice place to be. The cats seem to like it, too.

sounding better already!

Finished putting up the ceiling corners. The little radio I've been listening to keeps sounding better and better.

I added a couple of pics, and consolidated all the pictures into one gallery. Have a look!

phase II -- almost done

Phase II is in the home stretch. The drywall is up, sanded, and painted (special thanks to Mitch for helping out immensely on that); the rail to hold the 703 fiberglass traps is hung on the walls; and the woodwork for 9 traps is all but done.

All that remains is to install the fiberglass in the traps, mount some fiberglass on the ceiling and doors, and cover everything with burlap. It's messy work, but once it's done, it's done.

Check out the pictures!

welcome

Howdy folks,

There have been a few requests for some pictures and updates on the progress of my studio renovations, so I decided to start a blog. I'll try to keep things updated as we get further along in the process.

Special thanks to Ken Hutton, Josh Apple, Richard Parsons, and Blake Guthrie, without whose help none of this....well, all of it would have taken much longer.

Check out the pictures!
